On Thursday 30 October, the very first “Symphonic Date” took place — a collaboration with Bozar, celebrating a great symphony from the classical repertoire, introduced by the incomparable Thomas Vanderveken. A look back at an evening that proved memorable on many levels.
The orchestra is ready, the Henry Le Bœuf Hall is packed, and the audience — of all ages — buzzes with anticipation. A large screen dominates the stage, showing a portrait of Dvořák, the great Czech composer. Everything is set for the first Symphonic Date, a new concert format designed for both newcomers and seasoned music lovers. The idea is simple: in one hour, diving into the world of classical music and exploring a major symphony alongside host Thomas Vanderveken, who reveals its secrets and subtleties with wit and humour.
A short video sets the scene, and the master of ceremonies steps forward to begin his introduction. Conductor James Feddeck joins him briefly to discuss the work — Dvořák’s epic Symphony No. 9, “From the New World”, whose familiar themes even inspired the music from Jaws.
The presentation concludes with a powerful and moving tribute to our dear concertmaster Alexei Moshkov, who passed away very recently. James Feddeck reminded the audience how much Alexei meant to the BNO over his 27-year tenure. More than a colleague, he was part of our musical family. His remarkable artistry, his constant kindness, and his unfailing sense of humour will resonate for a long time in our hearts — and in those of our audience. This concert was dedicated to him.
