Since 1936, the Belgian National Orchestra has brought symphonic music to life, combining passion and dedication in classical concerts and innovative formats alike. From our home base, the iconic Henry Le Bœuf Hall in Bozar, we craft new soundscapes time and time again!
The Belgian National Orchestra aims to pass the rich history of symphonic music on to new generations. To this end, we combine the classical and romantic repertoires with 20th-century and a great deal of contemporary music. Recently, Thomas Adès and the late Wim Henderickx joined us as season’s composers, and we like to highlight female composers such as Lili Boulanger, Unsuk Chin and Sofia Gubaidulina. We regularly present Belgian and European premieres, with composers such as Annelies van Parys, Michael Daugherty and Andrew Norman, among others, as well as world premieres of composers like Piet Swerts and Keiko Devaux.
We offer a dynamic programme with respected soloists and promising talents. Our programme is regularly graced by world-renowned soloists such as Hilary Hahn, Leif Ove Andsnes, the Labèque sisters and Ian Bostridge. We also provide a platform to young star soloists and local talents such as conductor Gabriel Hollander, soprano Helene Bracke and pianist Liebrecht Vanbeckevoort.
As the resident orchestra of Bozar, the Centre for Fine Arts, we perform in the Henry Le Bœuf Hall on an almost-weekly basis. While its seashell-shaped interior remains impressive and modern in appearance after almost 100 years, the hall’s greatest secret is its incredible acoustics. We feel truly at home here, and that shows in every one of our concerts. If you have ever attended a concert here, you will no doubt agree.
As Brussels’ musical ambassadors we collaborate closely with organisations such as la Monnaie and Bozar while also looking further afield. By initiating international collaborations we strengthen our position in the global arts scene and contribute to the exchange of cultural values.
The Belgian National Orchestra tours throughout Belgium, from Ostend to St. Vith, and also performs abroad in leading international concert venues such as the Philharmonie de Paris and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
Our role in the Queen Elisabeth Competition, one of the world’s most prestigious music competitions, is a source of pride for us. As regular accompanists to this competition, not only do we promote exceptional talent but we also contribute to the global reputation of this unique event.
