The renowned violinist Nemanja Radulović takes on Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, alongside Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5.
Alongside the charismatic Nemanja Radulović, the Belgian National Orchestra blends classicism and modernity with Tchaikovsky’s wonderful Violin Concerto. This work was born in a hotel overlooking Lake Geneva in Switzerland, where the composer was recovering from the depressions and nervous breakdowns caused by his unhappy marriage to a young conservatory student. Tchaikovsky composed the score in record time, inspired by the charming presence of Josif Kotek, a 22-year-old violin and composition student who advised him on violin techniques.
In the second half, Prokofiev showcases his command of classical forms with his Fifth Symphony. Having just returned to Stalinist USSR after nearly 30 years of unsuccessfully trying to win over Western audiences, Prokofiev sought to prove his ability to conform to the artistic demands of the regime. The result is a timeless, powerful, and deeply personal symphony.
