In this concert, Rachmaninov’s Third Symphony complements Prokofiev’s Second Piano Concerto. Though both composers are Russian, these works were not created in Russia but instead reflect the styles they developed in exile to appeal to their new audiences.

In Paris, Prokofiev embraced a more experimental language—some might call it expressionist—exploring harsh sonorities, tense harmonies, and a bold departure from classical conventions. Meanwhile, in the United States, Rachmaninov composed a more traditional symphony for the Philadelphia Orchestra, though he infused it with his distinctive style, rich in Russian and Orthodox influences, continuing in the vein of Tchaikovsky.
