Brussels, May 2, 2024. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs, Foreign Trade, and Federal Cultural Institutions, Hadja Lahbib, is pleased to appoint Bob Permentier as the Intendant of the Belgian National Orchestra. He assumed the position on May 1, 2024, for a six-year term.
Bob Permentier (b. 1971) has a long history with the Belgian National Orchestra, where he has been a member since 1994, playing the bassoon. He also stands out for his personal commitments, having worked for the past 13 years in event organization and cultural management as the artistic director of B-Classic, the Limburg branch of the Festival van Vlaanderen, which annually brings together musicians of national and international renown. His experience among the 80 musicians of the Belgian National Orchestra and his knowledge of the Belgian cultural scene—both in its organizational and relational aspects—align perfectly with the orchestra's mission: to promote and challenge the symphonic repertoire in an innovative way while holding a central place in contemporary society on both Belgian and global scales.
Bob Permentier’s vision is unifying: by building bridges between symphonic music and the Belgian social fabric, the Belgian National Orchestra aims to create more connections and broaden its audience. The goal is to balance tradition and innovation, where the artistic excellence required by the symphonic repertoire meets formats that transcend audiovisual genres. The captivating experiences that result will invite a diverse, passionate, curious, and multigenerational audience. These projects will only be achievable through close partnerships with key cultural players in Brussels, Belgium, and internationally, notably with Bozar, the privileged partner where the orchestra is permanently in residence.
Bob Permentier, a Brussels native in heart and mind, asserts: “The repertoire of classical symphonic music and its rich tradition deserve a bright future. At the same time, we must dare to explore new artistic paths and create meaningful dialogue between the orchestra and the community, where music plays a key role in connection. Here, tradition and innovation blend into a rich musical experience that reflects our community.
In synergy with Bozar, the Belgian National Orchestra aspires to a shared musical future that resonates both locally and globally. The current transformation of Bozar into a transversal arts house, combined with the ambitious goals of the Belgian National Orchestra, offers a unique opportunity to modernize the musical offering while maintaining the highest possible quality. This integrated approach opens the door to valuable synergies, in which we must be a key partner. I am convinced that the Belgian National Orchestra, located at the heart of the capital of Belgium and Europe, can play a pioneering and inspiring role in the cooperation between European and international symphony orchestras. Our music is the language through which we establish connections, build bridges between cultures, and create harmonious dialogue, and I am eager and honored to contribute to this.”
Gust Vriens, Chairman of the Board: “We are delighted to count on Bob Permentier and his extensive experience within our beautiful orchestra to guide it strategically, concretely, and relevantly. His appointment concludes the four-month procedure during which all candidates’ profiles were rigorously evaluated. Bob meets all the criteria that his position demands, and his vision perfectly aligns with the objectives of the BNO, demonstrating all the managerial, artistic, and human skills required to excel in his stewardship. Alongside our principal conductor Antony Hermus, we are confident that Bob will inspire and lead the orchestra with attentiveness and passion.”
A new chapter opens for the Belgian National Orchestra, in line with its new 2024-2025 season titled “Once upon a time…”. An exciting story that is yet to be written.
