From 6 to 8 February, the Belgian National Orchestra and Bozar shone a spotlight on the many facets of Béla Bartók — the renowned Hungarian composer whose highly distinctive orchestral language was deeply shaped by Eastern European folk traditions. A look back at a vibrant, colourful weekend with chief conductor Antony Hermus, Romani violinist Tcha Limberger, and classical violinist Simone Lamsma.
On Friday, the programme celebrated traditional melodies and Bartók’s works inspired by them — tunes he collected during his travels through Hungary and Romania, particularly Transylvania. Alongside orchestral pieces and the Violin Rhapsody No. 1 with Simone Lamsma, the evening featured intimate duos (performed by our violinists Jacqueline Preys and Michael Bonnay, as well as concertmaster Misako Akama with Tcha Limberger) and authentic folk sounds brought by the Kalotaszeg Trio.

On Saturday in Leuven and Sunday at Bozar, the focus shifted towards Bartók’s major masterpieces, including The Miraculous Mandarin. Earlier on Sunday, Bozar hosted a true Bartók marathon from 11 a.m. onwards, inviting audiences to explore his chamber music performed by conservatory students (including members of our Orchestra Academy), advanced amateurs, and professional musicians.
