The BNO on tour in Amsterdam with Saskia Giorgini in Tchaikovsky's challenging First Piano Concerto. Also on the programme: Rachmaninoff's enchanting Symphonic Dances, conducted by British conductor Alpesh Chauhan.
Italian-Dutch pianist Saskia Giorgini is internationally acclaimed for her CD recordings and concert performances. She won both the Gramophone Awards 2025 and the Choc de Classica with her album Images, featuring works by Debussy. For her debut in the Main Hall of the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, she will perform Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto, one of the most beloved piano concertos ever written, in which French, Russian and Ukrainian folk tunes are masterfully incorporated into the impressive solo part.
Rachmaninoff was a great admirer of his older colleague and friend Tchaikovsky. As a tribute, he composed his Second Piano Trio for him in 1893. Under the baton of Alpesh Chauhan, the BNO will perform the popular Symphonic Dances by the Russian master Rachmaninoff. An impressive work for large symphony orchestra, with brass and woodwind instruments and even saxophones, it culminates in a rich sound world full of dramatic contrasts and surprising combinations.
