Part sound walk, part urban exploration, part symphonic concert, City of Floating Sounds transforms Brussels and Antwerp into open-air musical stages. Instead of heading straight to Bozar or deSingel, audiences begin their journey from different starting points across the city. Using a specially designed app, each participant moves through the streets while listening to evolving fragments of Huang Ruo’s composition.

As the journey unfolds, the music shifts and expands. The closer you get to the concert hall — and to fellow audience members — the richer the sound becomes, revealing new orchestral layers and textures. Every route creates a different experience: the streets you choose, the encounters you have and the movement of the crowd all shape what you hear.

Gradually, the different routes converge at the concert hall. There, the fragments heard along the way finally come together as the full symphony comes alive on stage, performed by 80 musicians of the BNO under the direction of Jessica Cottis, the “mayor” of this temporary city of sound. What began as an individual journey becomes a powerful collective moment as the full score takes shape.

Blending technology, live performance and urban space, City of Floating Sounds pushes beyond the traditional concert format and invites you to hear both the city and its inhabitants differently. Step into a constantly evolving world of sound where music, technology and human connection merge into a truly unique experience.

The concert will start at various meeting points, which will be communicated later.

M. Butterfly, coming to La Monnaie

With more than a nod to Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, composer Huang Ruo forged in 2020 an unconventional love story into a compelling opera that turns gender conventions and cultural power relations upside down. Conducted by Carolyn Kuan and directed by Krystian Lada, this European premiere will be presented at La Monnaie from 20 April to 4 May 2027.
