David Popper, Requiem, Op. 66
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Variations on a Rococo Theme, Op. 33 (arr. for cello and strings by Ryuichi Horikoshi)
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Serenade for Strings in C major, Op. 48

The Young Belgian Strings is a string orchestra composed of 21 young talents from the different string instrument classes of all the Royal Conservatories and Music Schools of Belgium. The aim of the string orchestra is to give to laureates and students the opportunity to meet, exchange experiences, enhance their learning, perform in the most prestigious international concert halls and prepare for a future career in the world’s major orchestras.

In this concert, the Young Belgian Strings will first perform the Requiem by Bohemian composer David Popper, one of the most legendary cellists of the 19th century. The solo parts of this work for three celli and orchestra will be performed by Olsi Leka (principal cellist of the Belgian National Orchestra and cello teacher at the Brussels Conservatory) and two of his students: João Gonçalves and Florianne Remme.

Olsi Leka will then venture into Tchaikovsky's famous Rococo Variations with the Young Belgian Strings conducted by Dirk Van de Moortel. Tchaikovsky composed this work for the German cellist Wilhelm Fitzenhagen who, like him, taught at the Moscow Conservatory. With the Rococo Variations, Tchaikovsky expressed his admiration for the simplicity, order and clarity of Mozart's music. The Matinee Concert also includes Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings, one of the most beautiful works for string orchestra ever written.
