Michiel Delanghe

Michiel Delanghe (born in 1987) studied at the Royal music academy of Antwerp (Belgium), where he got his Master degree in conducting. His professors there were Ivo Venkov and Koen Kessels. By winning the Third Price (also known as Special Price) at the International Conducting Competition in Cadaqués in December 2013, he obtained international recognition.

As a student, he was appointed conductor of the Orchestra of the Royal music academy of Antwerp and of the Ensemble XXI. At the same time, he assisted conductors like Patrick Fournillier (Turandot), Yanis Pouspourikas (Candide) and Jef Smits (Aladino e la lampada magica de Nino Rota) at the Flanders Opera. He polished his technique with Robin Engelen and the ensemble “Het Collectief”, with Ivo Venkov at the Philharmonic Orchestra “Russe-Bulgaria”, with Mark Heron at the Camerata of Manchester as well as with Peter Eötvös at the Philharmonic Orchestra of Radio France.

In July 2014, Michiel Delanghe made his debuts with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Castilla y Leon. For this performance, he conducted Mozart and Beethoven. Since then, he has also conducted the Symphonic Orchestra of Barcelona, the Youth Orchestra of Girone and the Orchestre National de Lille. As an assistant, he worked with Christian Arming at the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège (performing Schubert’s 9th Symphony), Antony Hermus at the Opéra de Rennes (performing La Finta Giardiniera by Mozart), Koen Kessels at the Opera Vlaanderen (performing Satyagraha by Philip Glass) and Eric Withacre at the Brusels Philharmonic with the Choir of the Flemish Radio (performing various pieces of repertoire).

More recently, Michiel Delanghe made his debuts at the head of the Flemish Philharmonic Orchestra - known today as the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra-, but also at the head of the Belgian National Orchestra in “MOL”, a production for children, and at the Brussels Philharmonic as part of the recording of “Carmen Amoris” by Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost as well as the project “REMUA”.

Passionate about the stage and about every variety of musical theater, Michiel Delanghe is the musical director of “Zwanemans”, directed by Guy Joostens. This revisit of “Lohengrin” by Richard Wagner was enabled by the collaboration between Het PALEIS, the Opera-Ballet-Vlaanderen and the IOA (International Opera Academy). It became a huge success.

Since September 2017, Michiel Delanghe is a guest professor in the conducting division of the Royal music academy of Antwerp. Besides his requirements as a teacher, he will conduct the Gala Concert (with Frank Braly playing the piano). He will also conduct in the near future the 9th Symphony (Symphony of the New World) by Dvorak as well as the opera “Albert Herring” by Benjamin Britten (the scenic version “Black Hall” from DeSingel in Antwerp, 2019).

Among other future commitments, one can notice many re-invitation, in particular from the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, the Belgian National Orchestra, the Brussels Philharmonic and the Vlaanderen Opera, where he will conduct a revisit of Guiseppe Verdi’s Macbeth, renamed BANKET!, with his ensemble “deCompagnie”. The world premiere will take place at the opera in Ghent and will then be performed at the theater ‘t Eilandje in Antwerp (2019).
