Public funding
The Belgian National Orchestra falls under the authority of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and Foreign Trade, and the Federal Cultural Institutions Sophie Wilmès.
The Belgian National Orchestra is a cultural institution and as such is subsidised by the federal government and funded by the National Lottery.
The National Lottery’s business philosophy can be summarised as “Contributing to the well-being of the community as a whole”, which is why it ploughs a considerable proportion of its profits back into the community by financially supporting a wide range of projects across many different areas: humanitarian, social, cultural, sporting, scientific, etc.
The National Lottery also attaches a great deal of importance to culture. Whether through subsidies or sponsorships, the National Lottery makes a daily contribution to the success of all kinds of cultural associations and events: opera, singing, dance, music, poetry, the visual arts, concerts, exhibitions, festivals, theatre, cinema and so on, reaching audiences of all kinds and certainly not neglecting the young.
It is in this context that the National Lottery has for many years supported the National Orchestra of Belgium, a key player in the musical life of Belgium, and has helped the orchestra achieve its current artistic prestige.
This remit to help improve the community’s well-being coupled with the size of the subsidies it provides has made the National Lottery by far and away the “most generous patron in the country”.
Some concerts are performed with the support of the Tax Shelter of the Belgian federal government.
