Sergei Prokofiev is now counted among the greats in the classical music repertoire. However, his journey as a composer was fraught with challenges; wherever he went, he was surpassed in success by at least one other musician. In San Francisco, it was Rachmaninoff; in Paris, Stravinsky; and upon his return to the USSR, Shostakovich.

Nevertheless, at each stage, Prokofiev endeavored to innovate and adapt to his varied audiences, creating a multitude of works in sometimes vastly different styles. This lecture aims to reframe the reception of this composer's music, at times considered either too traditional or too innovative. Through examples from his Second Piano Concerto and Second Symphony, it will also explore the significance of this music for today's twenty-first-century audience.
