On Friday 17 October, the Bozar audience experienced a night of rare intensity with violinist Sergey Khachatryan and the BNO. Under the inspired direction of associate conductor Michael Schønwandt, Brahms’s Violin Concerto and Schumann’s Symphony No. 3 unfolded with full expressive power and lyrical beauty.
Reuters (Milan Berckmans and Tierney Kugel):
"Brahms' music is such a reflection of beauty, in nature and also in human feelings," Khachatryan told Reuters. "If you have such an incredible violin, you can show that." The 'Kiesewetter' Stradivarius is among the highest valued of several hundred remaining Stradivari violins.
Bachtrack (Patrice Lieberman):
“All praise to Michael Schønwandt, the perfect partner at the helm of a Belgian National Orchestra on magnificent form, achieving a rich, unified sound of great depth without ever overpowering the soloist.”
Klassiek Centraal (Werner de Smet):
“What made this evening unique was not just virtuosity or musical perfection, but the emotional coherence uniting each work. Schønwandt and Khachatryan guided the audience through shadow and light, melancholy and ecstasy. Once again, the Belgian National Orchestra proved that Romanticism isn’t only written on paper — it lives: a shared breath between composer, musicians and audience, where passion, pain and joy merge into one.”
