Johannes Brahms, Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98

LET’S TALK ABOUT CONDUCTING!

"A blueprint of the secrets of conducting," is how Antony Hermus, chief conductor of the Belgian National Orchestra, described the first part of this concert. "What does the man or woman actually do with that baton? Why do musicians need a conductor? Do they actually need a conductor?" Together with presenter Sander De Keere, Antony Hermus goes in search of answers. Also, expect a solo by our violinist Misako Akama!

Actor Stefaan Degand has dreamed almost all his life of one day conducting Brahms' Fourth Symphony with an 80-strong orchestra. That dream is now coming true. Stefaan embarked on a musical voyage of discovery for Canvas, searching for the soul of Johannes Brahms. He immersed himself in the score for a year and, under the guidance of young conductor Pascale Van Os, learned to master the intricacies of a symphonic orchestra. In addition, Stefaan met Brahms specialists and top international conductors such as Antony Hermus, chief conductor of the Belgian National Orchestra, and travelled to the Austrian village where Brahms completed his magnum opus in 1885. Stefaan's musical odyssey, culminating in this concert, will be filmed by the filmmakers of Borgerhoff & Lamberigts and broadcast on VRT CANVAS from early 2024 in the series Maestro Degand.

The presentation of this concert will be in Dutch only.
